May Days of Melies – The Infernal Caldron [Le chaudron infernal] (1903)

So much to enjoy and appreciate in this one: the striking colors (especially the flames and demon green), the devilishly macabre subject matter, and the Méliès special effects. The coolest tricks involve fireball spirits that become ash and the use of out-of-focus superimposition to create the most visually-impressive ghosts in film up to this point.

Of late I have fallen far behind my surveying the web and especially your astonishing posts. I clearly have much to catch up on and relish spending time with some amazing films. This was truly an amazing piece; I found more entertainment delight in this than the last three feature films I’ve seen combined. Brilliantly rendered colors, and the apparitions were truly inhabitants of the supernatural. As always, an invaluable addition from the best place to be at wordpress.
